What's It All About?

Aww shucks

Hulu.com just added "Rhoda" to their library of TV shows. I was super excited to see that because as a child of the 70's with a once-upon-a-time-feminist-mother, I always thought that show (from the handful of episodes I've managed to catch over the years) was going to be one of those shows that would showcase women as smart and independent.

While I knew that she meets and marries "Joe", I also remember that she doesn't stay married. So it didn't start off as being a show about a single woman but evolves into one -well a divorcee that is. I thought I would still find it interesting and hopefully be able to relate to the character but upon watching the pilot, I don't think that is going to be the case. It has 3 elements that I just don't care for in a show I'm going to invest time into.

1. The god-awful laugh track. For some reason I have a really low tolerance for them. The writing has to be so sharp & funny that I'm laughing along loudly enough that I don't hear it or can ignore it easily enough. This one? Nope. The dialogue wasn't that funny.

2. The character of her sister "Brenda" is moaning and groaning about how fat she is when she most certainly ISN'T (Not that I know sizes very well but she can't be bigger than an 12/14) and she is living in her sisters shadow. If I were to watch further episodes I think I would see that "Rhoda" is a good influence on her and maybe she stops beating herself up so much and stops letting her mother make her feel bad about herself but I don't think I can bear to watch it enough to find out

and lastly

3. The character of her meddling mother "Ida". That type of character has never appealed to me (that was one of my reasons for not watching "Everybody Loves Raymond"...I certainly didn't love him/it!)

I'm kind of bummed that it didn't live up to my hopes and expectations. It had nothing to do with it being the pilot (and one really shouldn't judge a show by it's pilot right?) but I think you just know when something's not for you and this wasn't for me. Oh well.

I guess it didn't help that I read the wikipedia page on it and knowing what happens in every season kinda ruins it...well, that's not always the case. I didn't get turned off of "Bones" by reading the wikipedia page first....

Anyhoo...

It's my weekend now and I'm so so happy about that. Sadly, though, it will be a normal schedule for me around this holiday. I thought I was getting the 4th of July off but nope. I'll take small comfort in getting paid double-time that day. And maybe celebrating will be going on still when I get off work and can go join in some fun somewhere...

I'm going to enjoy a lazy recharge-the-battery day tomorrow (uh, today) and then Thursday, hopefully have breakfast w/B (fingers crossed ;) ) then get together w/I that afternoon after she's done with work. The plan is to do something that involves being outdoors enjoying the fine weather ...well, hopefully fine weather, it's been crappy the last couple of days.

OK, I'm talking about the weather. I think that's a sign that I can just stop here for tonight and crash. (Well, it is about 4am...bedtime!)

Nighty night.
